영어 원서 공부"모비딕"

pitching and rolling

피칭앤롤링은 배의 움직임, 흔들림과 관련된 용어로 보인다. 구글링했을 때 찾은 설명을 아래 붙인다.

Pitch describes the up and down motion of a vessel. This is characterized by the rising and falling of the bow and stern in much the same way as a teeter-totter moves up and down. Roll is how we describe the tilting motion of the ship from side to side. (출처)

pitch는 천막을 치다, 장대를 꽂다 또는 공을 던지다와 같은 의미가 있고 roll은 구르다, 회전하다의 의미다.

feint

이 단어는 놀랍게도 내가 알고 있던 단어였다. 평소에도 쓰는 단어인데 영어로 본 건 처음이라 캐치를 못했다. '페인트지롱'할 때의 그 페인트다. 발음은 우리가 아는 그 발음이 맞고 뜻은 ~인 척하는 것을 말한다. 일하는 척 한다라고 할 때는 make a feint of working이라고 하면 된다. 
 
unobstructed

어넙스트럭틷 강세는 이렇게.. 럭 전까지는 거의 뭉개는 발음처럼 들린다. 뜻은 obsturcted의 반대다. 영한사전 검색 시 뜻은 '막다', '가로막다', '(진행을)방해하다'의 뜻인데 obstructed를 이미지 구글링 하면 거의 신체적인 이미지가 나오는걸로 보아서, 질병 등 신체 기능에 관련해 주로 쓰이는 것으로 보인다.

영어 뉴스 읽기

backdrop

Experts point to Nike's surprise CEO change as the backdrop behind its accumulated earnings slump and intensifying competition since the end of the pandemic. 

backdrop은 뒤에(back) 걸어놓은(drop) 것을 말하는데, 연극같은 무대에서 뒤에 걸어둔 배경그림, 천막 등을 말한다. 일반적으로는 어떤 사건이 일어난 배경을 말하는데 위 기사의 문장에서도 나이키 CEO 교체 배경을 설명하면서 backdrop을 썼다. 
 
standpoint

From a valuation standpoint, ANF is quite cheap since it trades at a forward P/E ratio of 16, lower than the S&P 500 index average of 21.

이건 '관점', '입장'이란 뜻인데, 예문을 몇 개 공부하려고 정리한다 

• From a geographical standpoint, we are entitled to the entire port area.
• And interestingly, From an identity standpoint, what does it mean to have a disability?
• From a phototheraphy standpoint, maybe not the best behavior. 

움.. at이랑 붙을 거 같은데 예문을 찾아보니 전부 from이랑 붙어있다. 그리고 재밌는 건 단수 취급이네?

'트위스트와 함께'라는 뜻인데 내가 아는 트위스트는 이거뿐이거든... 후

 한국인이라 어쩔 수 없ㅋㅋㅋ 트위스트의 진짜 뜻을 찾아보자! 트위스트는 동사로 쓸 때 '꼬다', '비틀다'의 의미가 있다. 그래서 명사도 마찬가지로 '꼬임', "꼬여있는 것'을 말한다. 그리고 댄스 장르로 우리가 익히 알고 있는 트위스트의 뜻도 있다. 그래고 약간 의외의 뜻이 "an unforseen development"의 뜻이었는데 예측 못한 전개, 발달, 진행같은 걸 말하는 거다. 
 
예문을 발췌한 기사는 에어비앤비의 미래에 대한 얘기가 나오는 기사였는데, 거기 CEO가 에어비엔비 투어같은 관광 코스? 프로그램을 판매하는 서비스를 시작했다는 얘기를 하면서 나왔다. 에어비앤비의 투어 서비스는 일반적인 투어랑 다르게 약간 색다른 면이 있다고 설명하면서 'with a bit of a twist'라고 말한 것.  좀 더 궁금해서 Hinative에 검색해봤는데 아주 쉽게 설명해준 답변이 있어서 그것도 링크를 건다. -> 여기
 
여러가지 상황에서 쓰일 수 있는건데 좀 우리나라 표현으로 치면 '반전매력이 있는'이런 느낌이지 않을까?
