이 문단에 모르는 단어가 꽤 많아서 미리 단어 정리부터 하자.

에이햅이 캐빈에서 나와서 cast his eyes aloft 할 때마다 조타수가 보란듯이 휠을 돌리고 열정적인 마리너들이 빨리 아딧줄로 뛰어가서 못박히 금화를 쳐다보며 적도로 뱃머리를 돌리기를 기다린다는 내용이다. cast one's eyes 00라는 형태는 누군가의 시선을 어디로 향했다 또는 돌렸다와 같이 사용한다. 예문에서는 aloft와 함께 써서 위를 쳐다본다는 내용. cast one's eyes stealthily about이라고 하면 슬쩍 눈을 옆으로 돌리는걸 말한다. cast one's eyes down이라고 하면 눈을 내려까는것.
