몇 챕터인지 까먹었지만 문단 째로 해석 연습을 하려고 가져왔다. 이걸 같이 보면 모비딕 원서 해석의 난이도가 감이 잡히실 듯.
That night, in the mid-watch, 여기서 왓치는 교대근무처럼 순번제로 돌아가면서 특정 시간대에 임무를 수행하는 그 시간대를 의미한다. 그리고 미드 왓치의 미드는 미드나잇에서 나온 미드로, 자정이 포함된 근무 시간대를 미드-왓치라고 한다. 그래서 댓 나잇, 인 더 미드 왓치는 그날 밤에서 좀 더 세부적으로 자정 즈음 시간대라고 특정해준 표현이다.
when the old man—as his wont at intervals— stepped forth from the scuttle in which he leaned, and went to his pivot-hole,wont는 '습관'을 말하는데 요즘 말투는 아니라 구글링해도 잘 나오진 않는다. ‘그가 때때로 보이는 습관대로 그가 기대고 있던 스커틀에서 앞으로 걸어나와 피봇 홀로 갔을 때’이렇게 해석할 수 있고 스커틀은 배에 있는 이런 형태의 출입구를 말하고 피봇 홀은 무엇인지 아무리 찾아도 모르겠다.

snuffing up the sea air as a sagacious ship's dog will, sagacious는 현명한, 영리한이란 뜻의 형용사다. 아 구문에서 dog will이 나를 정말 헷갈리게 만들었는데 처음에는 '개의 의지'라고 생각했다. 그런데 이렇게 해석할 경우 '개의'라는 소유격을 만들어주는 표현이 없다. 그래서 조동사 will 이고 뒤에 snuff up이 생략된 형태인 것 같다고 최종 판단했다. 그리고 한 가지 더 의아한 부분이 왜 sniffing이 아니라 snuffing을 썼을까라는 점이었다. 둘 다 냄새를 맡다라는 의미가 있어서 snuff를 사용한 이유가 궁금했는데, sniff와 snuff를 이미지 구글링해보고 두 단어의 차이를 알았다. sniff는 강아지들이 킁킁킁거리면서 냄새를 맡는 이미지가 주로 나오는 반면, snuff의 검색 결과는 시가 사진이 대부분이다. 그래서 이 구문에서 snuff를 쓴건 바다 냄새를 킁킁킁킁 이렇게 맡은게 아니라 음미 하듯이 스으읍 깊게 들이켜서 향을 느낀 것에 가까운 쪽이기 때문인 것 같다.

exploration은 탐사, 탐험, 연구를 말한다. 우주 탐사, 석유 개발처럼 space exploration, oil exploration 명사를 합쳐서 써도 되고 exploration into something으로 쓰기도 하는데 이런 경우는 exploration의 뜻이 '연구'에 가까운 것으로 보인다.
