리폼 클럽에서 80일 동안 여행을 할  수 있다 없다로 내기를 한 필리어스는 자신의 발렛 파스파르투와 내기를 증명하기 위해 떠납니다.

80일이면 두 달은 넘고, 세 달은 못되는 기간인데요. 방학 동안 필리어스 포그의 80일간의 여행 루트를 따라해보는 것도 재미있을 것 같단 생각이 듭니다. 육개월이면 여행이 끝나기도 전에 지쳐서 집에 가고 싶을 것 같고 두 달이면 너무 짧을 것 같고 80일? 해볼만 한걸? 싶은 생각이 들어요.

지금은 교통 수단도 훨씬 발전해서 이동시간이 많이 단축되었을 테고, 필리어스 포그와 파스파르투의 여행보다는 더 즐기면서 여유있게 여행을 할 수 있지 않을까요?

Passepartout had a moist sensation about the eyes; his master's action touched his susceptible heart. 

Two first-class tickets for Paris having been speedily purchased, Mr. Fogg was crossing the station to the train, when he perceived his five freinds of the Reform. 

"Well, gentlmen," said he. "I'm off, you see; and, if you will examine my passport when I get back, you will be able to judge whether I have accomplished the journey agreed upon."

street door와 front door, porch의 차이

셋 다 집이나 건물의 출입구 부분의 문 또는 그 공간을 말합니다.

street door는 거리와 바로 이어져있는 문을 말하고, front door은 '정문'과 같이 집으로 들어갈 수 있는 출입구 중 가장 메인이 되는 문을 말합니다.

porch는 출입구가 있는 공간에 천장이나 지붕이 있는 외부 공간, 현관에 가까운 장소를 말합니다.

porch가 street door, front door와 다른 점은 문 자체보다는 문이 붙어 있는 공간을 의미하는 단어라는 점입니다.

porch는 공간 자체를 말하는 것이고 street door, front door 문 자체를 말하는 것이기 때문에 같은 뜻은 아닙니다.

Charing Cross는 어떻게 발음하나요?

Charing Cross는 런던 중심지의 랜드마크인 육거리를 말합니다. 런던과의 거리를 잴때 기준점이 되는 스팟입니다. Charing Cross의 발음기호는 [ˈtʃærɪŋ]이고 '채-링'과 같이 발음합니다.

the box는 어디인가요?

마차의 마부석을 the box라고 합니다. coach box, driver's seat이라고 말하기도 합니다. 자동차로 치면 운전석 옆의 조수석과 같은 곳을 말하는데요. 자동차의 조수석은 the box라고 하지 않기 때문에 위 문단에서 cab이 자동차가 아니라, 마차인 것을 알 수 있습니다.

참고로 자동차의 조수석 자리는 passenger's seat, front passenger's seat 또는 슬랭으로 shotgun이라고 합니다. 

지금은 마차를 타지 않기 때문에 the box라는 표현을 쓸 일이 없지만 비슷한 단어인 box seat은 사용되고 있습니다. 물론 뜻은 전혀 다릅니다.
